Structural Stability of Transition-Metal Binary Compounds

It is shown that the coordinates ΔN and N̄, where N is the periodic-table group number, effect a much better crystal-structure separation than do the coordinates of Zunger for 91 transition-metal-transition-metal compounds. It is concluded that there is no evidence from structure maps to support the assumption that s-p electrons control the crystal structure dependent part of the energy of this class of compounds nor is there evidence to deny that d electrons effectuate this control.
