Evaluates protein-rich substrates' effects on Tenebrio molitor larvae growth, suggesting optimal dietary strategies.
Numerous benefits are highlighted regarding the usage of edible insects as a substitute for a protein source, considering their rich nutrient levels. Tenebrio molitor L. is one among those insects that have gained attention as a possible future farmed insect, thriving in different feed substrates. Protein powders can lead to more efficient growth; therefore, this study was conducted. Plastic boxes are serving as larval rearing vessels measuring 12x12x6 cm, at a temperature of 22°C. Powders of pea protein, a vegan chocolate mix, hemp protein, and a chocolate and whey mix are used for this study. Apple was provided as a water source. The best protein powder for rapid mass growth of T. molitor L. larvae was a chocolate and whey mix; meanwhile, regarding the viability of the larvae over a longer period, hemp protein powder would be the most reliable alternative.
