Abstract

Abstract Cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of central nervous system (CNS) infections such as meningitis and encephalitis. leading to significant morbidity and mortality if not promptly recognized and managed. The pathogenesis involves endothelial injury, inflammation-induced hypercoagulability, and alterations in cerebral blood flow. The clinical presentation of CVT often overlaps with that of meningitis and encephalitis, including headache, altered mental status, and seizures, thereby making early diagnosis challenging. Advanced neuroimaging such as MRI and MRV, plays a pivotal role as the diagnostic modality of choice. This review emphasizes the importance of a high index of suspicion for CVT in patients with CNS infections and highlights the role of early neuroimaging and appropriate management, including timely administration of antibiotics for the underlying infection and anticoagulation therapy for CVT, in improving patient prognosis.
