Key Points

  • This report aims to highlight the diagnosis of a tracheal diverticulum in a patient suffering from bronchial asthma.
  • Case report of a patient with bronchial asthma and seasonal exacerbations.
  • Computed tomography used to identify the tracheal diverticulum.
  • Bronchoscopic examination conducted to assess the diverticulum's characteristics.
  • Tracheal diverticulum identified as probably acquired based on its size, location, and bronchoscopic view.
  • Asymptomatic patients typically receive medical treatment; symptomatic patients may require surgical intervention.

Abstract

A tracheal diverticulum is a rare finding which is found incidentally during computed tomography of the thorax. Due to asymptomatic presentation, it is rarely reported. It is either congenital or acquired based on the histology and its characteristics. We report a case of bronchial asthma with frequent seasonal exacerbation where a tracheal diverticulum was identified and diagnosed to have a probably acquired etiology based on its size, location, and bronchoscopic view. Asymptomatic patients are treated medically whereas symptomatic patients require diverticulectomy or laser cauterization via bronchoscope.
