ABSTRACT THE effect of anaerobic digestion of manure on nutrient availability was studied under greenhouse conditions. Anaerobically digested dairy manure was compared to fresh dairy manure, dairy manure from a storage basin, and commercial urea, as nitrogen sources. Application rates of 25, 50, and 75 g/kg were used. Wheat was selected as the test crop. Value of the nitrogen sources was measured by determining the above-ground dry matter production, grain yield, and grain protein content from each treatment. Digester effluent was found to be as effective as the other nitrogen sources studied in stimulating dry matter production, grain yields, and grain protein content. In general, anaerobically digested dairy manure seemed to perform at least as well as the other manures in promoting the growth of wheat.
