FORTUNATELY FOR TEACHERS of basic writing the student who wrote this remark to complete the statement After reading the comments on a paper I generally . . .is not typical. But how do basic writing students react to teacher comments on their papers? Thinking about this question, we realized that we had never asked our own students in any organized way. Therefore, we designed a questionnaire to do so. In addition to discovering how students actually respond to teacher comments, we learned how to write these comments more effectively. In order to get spontaneous student input we tried to make our questionnaire non-threatening and open-ended. We framed it as a memo to the students:
