Over 90% of the d-galactose present in Lumbricus terrestris cuticle collagen could be released as reduced di- and trisaccharides with NaOH-NaBH4. The structures of these oligosaccharides were shown to be 2-O-α-d-galactopyranosyl-d-galactose and O-α-d-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-O-α-d-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-d-galactose.
