A Cr₂O₃ impregnation treatment process can be used to densify and strengthen existing coatings and materials and to produce new coatings for use in adiabatic engines. Plasma sprayed zirconia densified with Cr₂O₃ exhibits an 87% lower wear rate than an undensified plasma sprayed zirconia coating, and a thermal conductivity value of 9.67 BTU -in/hr-ft² -°F at 1832 °F. A Cr₂O₃ densified ceramic coating exhibits a thermal conductivity value of 14.9 BTU - in/hr-ft² -°F at 1500 °F.
