Changes in engineering magnetostriction, /spl lambda//sub c/, with annealing of undrawn furnace-annealed iron-based amorphous wires are presented. The peak /spl lambda//sub c/ falls initially due to progressive stress relief. With further annealing surface crystallization is initiated and increases, leading to an increase in the peak /spl lambda//sub c/. The peak /spl lambda//sub c/ approaches the theoretical maximum, corresponding to an easy axis of magnetization oriented perpendicular to the wire axis, after annealing for sixty minutes at 470/spl deg/C.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
