Megamitochondria in alcohol-associated liver disease and cancer: a friend or foe?
Key Points
This research aims to explore the role of megamitochondria in alcohol-associated liver disease and cancer.
Analyzed liver biopsy specimens from patients with alcohol-associated liver disease.
Utilized light and electron microscopy for detailed examination.
Investigated the presence of megamitochondria over time.
Identified megamitochondria in liver biopsy specimens dating back to the 1970s.
Correlated the presence of megamitochondria with varying degrees of liver damage.
Highlighted potential implications for understanding disease progression in alcohol-associated liver conditions.
Abstract
Dated back to the 1970s, megamitochondria (giant mitochondria) were discovered in liver biopsy specimens from patients with alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) using light and electron microscopy.
