Since China's implementation of economic reforms in 1979, income inequality has been a subject of considerable concern. This article examines the inequality of wages between provinces from 1981–1991 for all units, as well as for state and collective work units separately for 1981–1988. The findings show an increasing rate in wage inequality throughout the period, with implications extending to the political, social and economic areas.
