This article gives an overview of a few selected historical examples of the mathematical investigation of wave phenomena, ranging from one of the earliest cases of the systematic study of periodic oscillations to modern mathematical methods and various applications. Hooke's analysis of the mass‐spring problem, population dynamics with periodic behavior, and chemical oscillations are discussed. Many examples of real‐world wave phenomena from everyday life are also mentioned. I also explain a few aspects and ideas of the modern method of teaching the underlying science of wave dynamics to a general audience with the help of easily accessible computer‐based tools (an example of seamless learning ).
