Car license plate extraction using color and edge information

We propose a novel method for car license plate extraction from color images. First, the edge map is obtained by applying Sobel edge detector. Second, a neural network is used as a classifier to identify pixel color. Finally, candidate license plate regions are located by information of edge and color distributions. Experimental results show that the proposed method is fairly reliable and can result in only a small number of false alarms.
