Let <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">F(x)</tex> be an absolutely continuous distribution having a density function <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">f(x)</tex> with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The Shannon entropy is defined as <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">H(f) = -∫ f(x) ln f(x) dx</tex> . In this correspondence we propose, based on a random sample <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">X₁, ⋯ , Xₙ</tex> generated from <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">F</tex> , a nonparametric estimate of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">H(f)</tex> given by <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Ĥ(f) = -(l/n) ∑i = 1ⁿ f̂(x)</tex> , where <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">f̂(x)</tex> is the kernel estimate of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">f</tex> due to Rosenblatt and Parzen. Regularity conditions are obtained under which the first and second mean consistencies of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Ĥ(f)</tex> are established. These conditions are mild and easily satisfied. Examples, such as Gamma, Weibull, and normal distributions, are considered.
