In autoxidizing n ‐hexylbenzene traces of SO 2 , evolved from “inactive” thiophenes or from other SO 2 sources, give rise to an oscillating oxidation with oxygen evolution. This entirely new phenomenon is explained in terms of an SO 2 ‐catalysed homolysis of hydroperoxides, which results in a very high initiation level.
