The Bracken Basic Concept Scale was translated into Spanish, and thirty-two preschool and primary age bilingual children were assessed in a counter-balanced format with the English and newly translated Spanish forms to assess the adequacy of the translation. The Spanish translation was rendered by producing: (a) an initial Spanish translation, (b) a blind back-translation, (c) repetitions of steps a and b, (d) review by a bilingual committee, (e) pilot field testing, and (f) a more extensive pilot testing and item analysis. Preliminary content validity of the Spanish BBCS as well as evidence of nontraditional alternate form equivalence was demonstrated.
