Investigates archaeological features in a historical landscape, suggesting ancient occupation.
Twenty 30m x 2m trenches were machine excavated across the site, investigating the results of the geophysical survey. Trenches were hand cleaned and examined. Archaeological features were hand excavated and recorded, tree bowls planned and representative sections drawn. Magnetic variation across the centre - north of the site was determined to be largely geological, and multiple tree bowls are most likely a relic of the pre-drained landscape. A scatter of undated features across the topographically higher areas may be connected to the prehistoric cropmarks and Bronze Age occupation seen to the southwest. Dating is limited but a handful of pottery sherds suggests features cut into the accumulated soils in the centre-north of the site are of a medieval or later date.
