This article examines how female-led heist films challenge patriarchal norms and redefine genre tropes.
This article explores the transformation of the heist film genre from its traditionally male-dominated narratives to female-led stories that emphasize collective female agency against patriarchal structures. Through close analyses of Ocean’s 8 (), Widows (), and Hustlers (), the article argues that these female heist films not only challenge conventional gender roles but also redefine the heist genre by foregrounding feminist concerns. Through its unique approach, across increasingly subversive films, the study examines how each film offers new takes on established genre tropes and highlights the necessity of “nasty” actions, coined “ethical nastiness,” as justified responses to systemic oppression.
