This article examines the essence, main factors, and types of cartographic generalization. The methods of selection and simplification of objects in the compilation of maps of various purposes and scales are discussed. Particular attention is paid to census and normative selection, geometric generalization, legend generalization, merging of territorial units, and exaggeration of objects. It is shown that cartographic generalization plays an important role in ensuring the clarity, informativeness, and readability of cartographic products.
