Review discusses fermentation techniques and process control for optimizing ethanol production from molasses, indicating implications for sustainability.
Ethanol production via molasses is among the most common examples of fermentation processes in industry because of the amenity of molasses, its high fermentable sugar levels, and the processing infrastructure developed. Nevertheless, the factors that significantly affect the production of ethanol at large scale include process control strategies, fermentation efficiency, microbial performance and operational stability. The current review provides an overview of the entire production of molasses-based ethanol industrially, especially focusing on the characteristics of the feedstock, the system of the yeast propagation, the design of the fermentation process and the monitoring of the process in commercial distilleries. The structure and quality of molasses determine the performance of fermentation, which requires the constant observation of the factors, including total sugars, pH, and impurity load. Yeast selection and multi-stage propagation systems that are discussed are key factors in maintaining high cell viability and consistent ethanol yields under industrial conditions. The review also looks at controlling the fermentation process, which involves control of temperature, pH, nutrient supplements and controlling contamination and its effect on productivity and operational efficiency. Moreover, the downstream processing, such as wash handling, distillation and by-products management, is lightly discussed to bring an overall picture of the ethanol production chain. Quality control practices and real-time monitoring systems that make the processes reliable and the products similar are also highlighted. By combining industrial operation facts and the factual literature on the subject, it is believed that the review can be a useful resource to the researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers seeking optimisation and sustainable development of the molasses-based ethanol production systems.
