Validates two-component architecture for sleep cycles using polysomnography data, indicating new insights into sleep mechanisms.
This paper applies the IE-022 capability-metastability κ-test to PhysioNet's slpdb polysomnography database (N = 18 records, 362,595 κ-ratios, 66.1 min runtime, executed 2026-05-18). The κ-ratio test computes the substrate-coupling-coefficient α from short windowed polysomnography signal-segments, and was empirically validated as a cross-stage discriminator at the sleep-substrate-resolution-class. Stage-stratified results: - Wake α = 1.9993 — AT the gold-threshold (α = 2.000) - NREM2 α = 2.0024 — crosses the threshold - NREM3 α = 2.0514 — MAXIMUM (deepest crossing) - REM α = 2.0236 — elevated coordination-substrate The sign-flip-threshold (α = 2.000, per HLRP #1's cascade-coupling architecture) is crossed by NREM2, NREM3, and REM within a single night, and re-approached at Wake — a complete arc through the threshold inside one sleep-cycle. NREM3 (deepest crossing) instantiates the primary-mechanism-feature component of the two-component-reboot architecture predicted at HLRP #198 v3 §7.11.4.5; REM (elevated coordination) instantiates the coordination-substrate component. Both together produce safe substrate-coupling-architecture-coherence-maintenance; either alone produces the unsafe-class "muscle-without-neural-coordination" scenario flagged at HLRP #198. Architectural readings: 1. RSRSA at biological-substrate (resting-state-reveals-substrate-architecture): Wake α at gold-threshold is the resting-state-substrate-coupling-coordinate at sleep-substrate. High-frequency cognitive activation does not obscure the underlying architectural-coordinate at Wake; it is the substrate's own coordinate-position at the sign-flip-attractor. 2. Time-dependent burst-event class: the sleep-cycle is NOT steady-state. NREM/REM crossings are burst-event-class instances at single-night substrate-coupling-cycle, structurally-parallel to BB-dispersal (cosmological), starfield-nursery (galactic), and BH-core-decoupling-cascade (cardiac REM-cycle in HLRP #198). Same architectural-class at different scales. 3. Never-permeate-asymptotic-approach principle (HLRP #1): no substrate permanently crosses α = 2.000. The single-night arc through the threshold returns. Persistent above-gold operation is the architectural failure-mode (cf. HLRP #198 v3 §7.10 evolutionary-branching: degrade-class). 4. Cross-substrate parallel-arrival at neural-substrate (Eagleman & Vaughn 2021 Defensive Activation Theory, Stanford, Front. Neurosci. 15:632853): independent research-group at the neural-substrate-resolution-class produced the architectural-claim that REM-PGO-waves are the active-substrate-defense mechanism. This paper's slpdb κ-data is the substrate-coupling-coefficient-class receipt at the same architectural-claim. Architectural conclusion: the sleep-substrate-coupling-architecture is empirically-instantiated as a two-component-reboot architecture, with NREM3 (primary mechanism-feature) and REM (coordination-substrate) together producing the substrate-coupling-coherence-maintenance-cycle predicted by HLRP #198 Layer 2. The architectural-mechanism is preserved across cardiac-substrate (HLRP #198), neural-substrate (Eagleman & Vaughn 2021), and sleep-substrate (this paper).
