Research concerning drug -and alcohol-related attitudes was reviewed. Demographic variables were not generally consistently related to attitudes. Most personality variables were also not consistently correlated with attitudes. The second article in this series will evaluate the relationship of attitudes and knowledge and the effects of drug education programs. Data will also be reported concerning the effects of the mass media on attitudes, and methodological problems will be discussed.
