A longitudinal follow-up od Smith's (1990) study of associations between academic achievement and self-reported teaching of younger siblings uses the data set on which the previous research was based, plus results of academic achievement tests from two years later for 566 members of Smith's original sample. Instead of the nonlinear associations between teaching younger siblings and reading and language achievement reported in the previous study, this analysis reveals positive linear associations between growth in academic achievement over the two-year period and the measure of teaching younger siblings
