A review is given of illness as a relational, transactional concept. A psychosocial typology might be practical for research purposes. This typology is not meant to be used for traditional medical purposes but rather to help recognize the associations between family dynamics and disease. An emphasis on stress and family coping with illness over time requires new approaches and methods. The concept of “psychosomatic family” is also discussed.
