This work begins from the concept of Ecogothic, which combines the characteristics of the Gothic genre with the growing contemporary concern about the environmental crisis. From this perspective, it proposes a re-reading of Manzoni’s The Betrothed, focused on the most prominent gothic scenes of the work from an ecocritical and ecofeminist perspective, highlighting the value these have in the transformative journey experienced by the protagonists, Renzo and Lucia. The conclusions suggest that the sinister and threatening elements of the natural environment can be interpreted as a critique of traditional anthropocentric and phallogocentric models. The ecogothic re-reading of this important novel of 19th century Italian literature not only makes reflect on the complexity of the relationship between the human and the non-human, but also highlights the relevance and didactic potential of Manzoni’s work for contemporary readers.
