The development of educational aspirations in high school students is represented in a causal model developed from the point of view of reference group theory and including measures of the influence of referents at two points in time. Change in the relative effects of the various causes specified is central to the investigation. The model is quantified via path analytic procedures separately for males and females using data on 3,687 Canadian students. The data suggest that the influence of referents changes over time, that parents exert the greatest influence, and that sex differences in this deciston-making process are manifest.
