The conjecture of Hoyle and Fowler that massive stars are involved in the production of strong radio sources is examined. It is shown that the release of energy of the order of 3 X 1061 ergs follows in a natural way from their model. Some corrections to the massive-star conjecture and the implication of these corrections to the expected energy release are discussed.
