The core of sustainability lies in three key pillars: social, environmental, and economic sustainability, often summarized as "people, planet, and profits."With time, other than simply focusing on sustainability, organizations have been adopting principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) due to various social, economic, and cultural changes across the globe. While India's rich diversity is a valuable asset, it also presents challenges in creating inclusive workplaces.Despite legal efforts, women hold few board positions in India, with progress remaining slow. Many companies lack strong DEI strategies, reflecting deeper cultural and structural barriers.Yet, gender-diverse leadership boosts innovation, ethics, and global competitiveness. These are some of the reasons why there is an urgent need for robust initiatives to promote gender equality and inclusivity in India's corporate governance. This study conducts a primary data analysis of responses from individuals with established domain expertise and professional experience, offering a critical examination of global practices, prevailing perceptions, and the progress achieved in the realm of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I).The paper begins with a deep dive into existing literature across critical themes of DE&I.It is followed by a primary research analysis of qualitative in-depth interviews conducted with ten senior corporate executives. The research highlights key themes of how corporations are adopting varied mechanisms to pursue DE&I goals in a socio-cultural space amidst regulatory and societal expectations, and the path ahead for developing and embedding inclusive policies within organizational structures. The study finds that Indian organizations are increasingly embracing DE&I with many instituting formal policies and initiatives driven by leadership teams. However, progress remains uneven due to cultural norms, limited resource s in smaller firms, and an overemphasis on metrics over meaningful inclusion.Effective DE&I requires strong, sustained leadership commitment to embed inclusive values into workplace culture. The research also highlights challenges and gaps that remain without undermining the criticality of the subject.
