Pianta received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1986 and is a professor in The Curry School of Education's Programs in Clinical and School Psychology at the University of Virginia. His work focuses on how relationships with teachers and parents, as well as classroom quality, can help improve outcomes for at-risk children and youth. Dr. Pianta is a principal investigator on the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development and with the National Center for Early Development and Learning, and editor of the Journal of School Psychology. He is the author of more than 100 journal articles, chapters, and books in the areas of early childhood development, school readiness, and parent-child and teacher-child relationships.
