This paper presents and discusses an approach to interaction design research entitled research in and through design. This denotes the study of the design process through the active involvement of the researcher in experimental design activities. The approach is exemplified by a case in which interaction design researchers engaged in the development of an interactive facade in order to generate insights into how to plan and carry out design for this type of interactive systems. This is followed by a discussion of the criteria by which the process and outcomes of research in and through design can be evaluated.
