This paper extends and completes the description of the properties of focused horizontal arrays in normal mode fields presented in the earlier paper [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 74, 1406–1417 (1983)]. The topics treated in this paper are: mode resolution criteria, an intercomparison of the resolution powers of cw array based mode resolution techniques, ray-mode picture transitions, the direct measurement of ocean waveguide range variability, and modal ‘‘Doppler amplification’’ by nonlinear curved array refocusing. Both theoretical and numerical results are presented.
