In the 1950s, the World Health Organisation, the apex organisation for global health, defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (1). Indeed, there is considerable evidence, including in modern western medicine, to suggest a strong link between physical and psychological aspects of health and disease. Physical symptoms sometimes have psychological origins (2). The mental and physical aspects of health are complexly intertwined not only as a subject of study in medicine but also in our daily lives.
