In ‘first generation’ CALL, the limitations of the medium forced the learner to engage in simple learning activities in order that the computer could monitor and give feedback on them. Increased power and flexibility in the ‘second generation’ has produced designs which attempt to support the learner in more complex processing, including inference fromcontext, semantic elaboration and various means of retrieval. There is ,however, a need for research into these learning processes, in order to provide on‐line tutorial support for learners in the use of such programs.
