The analysis reveals how European satirical cartoons depicted the 1890 British Ultimatum in Portugal, suggesting cultural perceptions.
In recent decades, the satirical press has received increasing interest as a valuable source for the analysis of different noteworthy events, contributing to our understanding of how the press and public opinion perceived certain issues or entities. This article investigates the 1890 British Ultimatum through that non-traditional lens: we analyse cartoons from the satirical press of different European countries, in search of a new or renewed interpretation of an event that generated significant turmoil in Portugal and for the Portuguese Monarchy. Using cartoons from Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, and Switzerland, we aim to establish comparisons and illustrate how cartoonists from these countries represented not only the Ultimatum, but also Anglo-Portuguese relations and Portugal itself.
