The development of university teaching in ethnic and racial studies and observations from this collection of articles are reviewed. Particular attention is paid to three key questions. Firstly, critical consideration is given to the institutional context within which this teaching takes place and the extent to which issues of racism and ethnic diversity have been addressed by higher education institutions. Secondly, the extent to which the development of students' value commitments, for example to anti-racism, should be explicitly addressed as a learning outcome by teachers is discussed. Lastly, subject benchmarking in this field is considered as a way forward for the elaboration of a common teaching framework.
