The creation of a competitive environment, which is evolving at a fast pace, is the result of the introduction of new production methods, research efforts, new product development and the discovery of new materials. So, we notice that there is a great need to minimize product development time. However, it is difficult for existing industrial prototyping methods to cope with the difficult timelines that companies have set themselves to gain competitive advantage in the market. In the direction of overcoming the described limitations in the fabrication of prototypes, two new methods were added, which are 3D printing and 3D scanning. We also analyze the most important categories of 3D printiers, 3D Scanners and relevant materials used. The result of these methods is, on one hand, swift digitization and creation of a digital model, and on the other hand, immediate manufacturing without the existence of a complex industrial infrastructure. Therefore, many problems faced by the industry today can be solved by the aforementioned technologies (3D printing, 3D scanning). In this context, a reverse engineering application is being presented in this work, where two engine parts are being 3D scanned and consequently its replica is being fabricated via 3D printing.
