In patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea was highly prevalent, with 82.7% having an apnea-hypopnea index ≥5, and was predominantly obstructive.

What is the prevalence, type, and risk factors of sleep apnea in ablation candidates with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation?
Sleep apnea is highly prevalent and predominantly obstructive in patients with paroxysmal AF, but current screening questionnaires are unreliable predictors.
BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested an association between sleep apnea (SA) and atrial fibrillation (AF). We aimed to study the prevalence, characteristics, risk factors and type of sleep apnea (SA) in ablation candidates with paroxysmal AF. METHODS/RESULTS: = 0.003, p = 0.367). CONCLUSIONS: In our AF population, SA was highly prevalent and predominantly obstructive. The high prevalence of SA detected in this study may indicate that SA is under-recognized in patients with AF. None of the screening questionnaires predicted SA reliably.
Traaen et al. (Thu,) conducted a cohort in Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (n=579). Polygraphy for sleep apnea diagnosis was evaluated on Prevalence of sleep apnea (AHI ≥ 5). In patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, sleep apnea was highly prevalent, with 82.7% having an apnea-hypopnea index ≥5, and was predominantly obstructive.
