Recently every state in the US. has passed laws giving grandparents the right to petition the courts for the privilege of visiting their grandchildren. Family specialists need to understand the nature of grandparents' rights laws because these laws affect their duties. Research findings and expert witness testimonies of family specialists should be included in court proceedings determining children's best interests. Such findings can influence future use of and amendments to grandparents' rights laws.
