In April 2015 Archaeological Solutions (AS) carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation of land at Brookside Farm, Holt, Norfolk NR20 5JS (NGR 59869 32120). It is proposed to construct a residential development. Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Team (NCC HES) have advised the Local Planning Authority that a trial trench evaluation of the site should be carried out to provide further information prior to the determination of the planning application submitted for the development (Breckland Council Planning Ref. 3PL/2014/0666/F), in order to identify the presence of any archaeological remains for which further mitigation may be required. In the event the trial trench evaluation revealed 16 archaeological features, and two natural ?channels. The majority of the recorded features were ditches (seven). Gullies (three), pits (three) and post holes (two) were also present. Alluvial deposit L1005 was visible in Trenches 1, 9 and 10, and two natural channels were recorded (F1046 (Trench 8) and F1030 (Trench 9). The highest density of features were recorded in Trenches 2 (six), 9 (four) and 3 (three). The dating evidence is slight. Pit F1014 contained two struck flint, and Pit F1018 contained contained four small moderately to heavily abraded sand tempered medieval (11th - 12th century) pottery sherds which given their small size and abrasion may be residual (Pottery Report below). Ditches F1020 and F1022 (Trench 3) and F1042 (Trench 4) contained small quantities of animal bone.
