Archaeological evaluation identifies prehistoric features in Devon, suggesting historical significance.
A 10 trench archaeological evaluation undertaken to a Written Scheme of Investigation agreed prior to works with Devon County Council using standard methodologies outlined by CIfA and DCC. Broadly speaking the geophysical results were verified by the archaeological trial trenching with a good correlation between probable archaeology and features in the ground, as well as blank areas proving to be blank. Of particular interest was a tentatively identified Prehistoric charcoal production platform which corresponded with a high-intensity burnt feature on the geophysical survey, from which flints and charcoal was recovered. Geoarchaeological works may provide further information about the types and ages of alluvial deposits encountered in the western trenches on the site.
