Watching brief observed modern deposits in drainage works at Carlisle Castle, indicating no archaeological finds.
An archaeological watching brief was required for SMC to undertake drainage works at the rear of the Ypres building at Carlisle Castle. The watching brief was undertaken in accordance with a project-specific WSI, CIfA guidelines and MoRPHE. All deposits and layers were recorded on pro-forma sheets with a full digital photographic record using appropriately sized scales. A total of six small trenches were monitored during drainage groundworks behind the Ypres building at Carlisle Castle. Only made ground deposits and modern rubble backfill / demolition layers were observed; no archaeological deposits, layers or finds were recorded.
