Accessible Images: AI-Generated Alt Text in Educational Publishing

Alt texts improve data recall, comprehension, and accessibility for individuals with visual impairments. However, current automatic methods for generating alt texts face challenges in accurately conveying the distinctive aspects of images in educational publishing. To address this challenge, we conducted a study to establish parameters for generating alt texts using AI. Alt texts enhance overall understanding and accessibility of visual data, allowing everyone to access the information contained in images, thus facilitating the inclusion of individuals with visual impairments in interpreting educational content. Moreover, a well-structured alt text helps make materials more easily accessible in digital contexts, promoting better editorial products and better interaction with visual content for all users.
