By focusing on the grassroots and offering a systematic empirical exposition of political party participation in environmental protest, the ways in which political fluidity and alliances with the left impact upon protest waves in Greece are examined. Sensitive to the limitations of national newspaper data, a protest case analysis is discussed in comparison to protest data drawn from public agency archives and a major local environmental activist newspaper. Influenced by political opportunities and constraints, cases involving political parties are radically different in numbers, action forms, environmental claims and challenged groups, even though they constitute only just over one-tenth of community-based protests.
