This review discusses the use of imaging modalities, clinical factors, and biomarker testing to risk stratify asymptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis for early intervention.
This review summarizes the literature on risk stratification and medical therapy for patients with apparently asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis.
May inform risk stratification for early intervention in asymptomatic severe AS; leaves open prospective validation of thresholds.
Although most asymptomatic patients with aortic stenosis (AS) have an excellent prognosis with observation only, some patients with severely stenotic aortic valves in the absence of symptoms may benefit from early intervention. In this article, we will review the literature on the use of varied imaging modalities, clinical factors, and biomarker testing to risk stratify such patients. Additionally, we will review the role of medical therapy to modify the course in AS. Clin. Williamson et al. (2012) conducted a review in Asymptomatic severe aortic valve stenosis. Imaging modalities, clinical factors, biomarker testing, and medical therapy was evaluated. This review discusses the use of imaging modalities, clinical factors, and biomarker testing to risk stratify asymptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis for early intervention.
