The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) was mandated by the Government & Administration (G&A) cluster to initiate an Employee Satisfaction Survey (ESS) programme following an observation that "Public servants are in certain instances influenced to leave their departments because of working conditions and also due to staff shortages and heavy workloads". It is against this background that the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in collaboration with AfricaScope revised and pilot tested the DPSA ESS questionnaire. This report presents the findings of the pilot ESS that was implemented at the Office of the Premier (OTP) in Mpumalanga Province (MP) over two specific fieldwork periods: 1) from 22 to 24 June 2013 and 2) from 22 to 23 July 2013. The ESS implemented in MP is part of a broader study which was also implemented in Gauteng and at Kalafong Hospital. The study tested the validity and reliability of the ESS instrument. The main aim of this report is to provide the ESS pilot survey results of the public servants at the OTP in MP who participated in the study. In other words, this report is considered as an important feedback vehicle for those participants from OTP in MP who participated in the survey. The results of the survey are not representative of the population of employees at the OTP and can therefore not be generalized to all public servants working at the OTP. In other words, the results only reflect the views of those respondents who participated in the study.
