Abstract

ABSTRACT: The madeleine episode is so famous that we tend to forget the laborious writing and rewriting that went into it. Indeed, Proust reworked almost all the details of this scene, including the madeleine itself, which had started in the early drafts as a piece of toast, soon replaced by a "biscotte." Proust also tried various combinations before deciding which role the biscuit and the tea should each have in the process of resurrecting the past. The madeleine episode therefore seems to stem less from a real gustatory experience than from the author's determination to properly stage the sacredness of writing.
