Judith Butler's account of performativity is the most influential contemporary theory of how identity is constituted by its own repeated enactment rather than expressed by a prior essence. The account is, however, scale-invariant: it describes constitution as proceeding at the same resolution whether a person performs before ten million strangers or before three intimates. This paper argues that scale is not ambient but load-bearing, and that two scale-related variables jointly govern whether performative constitution expands or colonises a self. The first is denominator size, the ratio of performer to audience: as the effective denominator contracts, each performed act commands a larger share of the total visible variance, the feedback loop tightens, and constitution accelerates toward what we term ontological escape velocity. The second is denominator governance: whether the denominator is imposed, by an institution, a market, or a gaze, or chosen, by the person who steps into it. From governance we derive an ethical distinction between being watched, the per-capita self imposed from without, and being witnessed, the per-capita self chosen from within. We array the two variables as a field and read four cases against it: the nation (Iceland, where a denominator artefact bootstraps a genuine literary culture), the institution (the cheerleader at seventy thousand observers, where the performed self overwrites its origin), the gaze (objectification as denominator-imposed compression to legible attributes), and the triad (the smallest viable denominator under chosen governance). We close on the recovery problem, arguing that recovery is not restoration of a pre-performative self, which does not exist, but migration between performative loops, and that governance, not size, determines whether a denominator collapses identity to a single legible variant or sustains a superposition of variants.
