In magnetic nanowires, surface-anisotropy from lateral surfaces may have a dominating influence on magnetic properties and, overcoming the stray-field energy, may cause spin-reorientation transitions from the homogeneous longitudinal magnetization state. Within a micromagnetic description, a general model for infinitely long cylindrical ferromagnetic wires under the influence of surface anisotropy is formulated and specialized to solutions with cylindrical symmetry. An analytic solution describing a continuous transition into stray-field-free vortex-states due to the axial part of the surface-anisotropy is presented. General properties of vortex-states stabilized by surface-anisotropy in cylindrical wires are briefly discussed.
