Fire growth models are considered with an emphasis on FARSITE and PHOENIX RapidFire. The prediction of spotfires in PHOENIX is also presented. Spotting can burnout areas ahead of the main fire and never join up with it. Early detection of areas exposed to spotting can limit damage and help fire managers choose the best available strategy. We propose a new method to predict high risk areas in front of a main fire by considering the spotting function used in PHOENIX and a Gaussian distribution for spot fires. This method can be used to minimise bushfire damage.
