The results of an investigation to determine the image reconstruction implications of using adjacent or polar drive configurations in Electrical Impedance Tomography systems employing the filtered back projection image reconstruction algorithm are presented. The filtered back projection image reconstruction process is expressed in terms of forward and back projection matrices. The back projection matrix is found by means of the Bipolar Transformation and the forward projection matrix by the Finite Element Method. The rank and ill-conditioning of these matrices were investigated by the Singular Value Decomposition technique. The results show that compared to images reconstructed via the adjacent drive matrices the polar drive images suffer a large loss in resolution and the polar drive configuration should therefore be avoided.
